Serge Poliakoff (January 8, 1900 – October 12, 1969) was a Russian-born French modernist painter belonging to the 'New' Ecole de Paris (Tachisme).
Poliakoff was born in Moscow and emigrated to Paris in 1923. He held his first exhibition, at the Galerie Drouant in 1931. From 1935 to 1937 he studied at the Slade School of Art in London (he also had bit parts as a musician in a few films while there). On his return to Paris he met Kandinsky, whose influence turned Poliakoff to abstract. painting. Others who had profound influences on him were Robert and Sonia Delaunay. From 1951 on he exhibited internationally, in London, New York, Tokyo, Belgium, Italy and Scandinavia. His prints were a major part of his œuvre.
